From being greatly influenced by my early experiences with film photography, a pinhole camera and the outcomes of the darkroom, to using a DSLR and now to mirrorless.I feel with the right vision and ethos, a visually interesting image can be taken on any format with any equipment. Being in the darkroom is where I felt was an unspeakable place of calm, focus on creativity and being able to produce an image from start to finish through the whole process and where my love for capturing moments really stems back to.
I still love to buy a roll of film and take my time to compose, capture and get everything balanced in camera. Doing this periodically allows me to slow down and capture 30 beautiful frames.
For me, Photography is such a personal experience of creating honest, organic images which reflect my personality, experiences, my vision of humanity and the complex lives we can live and break it down to something calming, vulnerable and relatable.
Focusing on the areas of photography that resonate with me and peoples journey's whether that be food photography and products that I love myself (gin and coffee are always winners!) or a genuine raw approach to portrait photography. Capturing those Elements of ethical brands and products and creating the story of how those products are made, come from my own place of curiosity and drawing on bringing that to a wider audience. In a world where everything is quick to access and we don't think as much about how and where things come from, I feel this is important to bring into the brand story and the final product.
Capturing moments that are genuine, real and authentic is something close to home. As a child, I remember being told to smile at the camera and then we all went about our natural personas afterwards. I look back on these images and think, does this show any of our personalities? What does this say about me or anyone else in the picture? When taking portraits, I aim to keep it casual with minimal cues and just chat as if I wasn't there, especially with children. Creating a sense of curiosity with their environment and allow their personality a chance to come out and they relax and feel themselves, resulting in natural lifestyle memories.
With my creative Images, I relate well with looking for detail in organic and natural materials and using the interesting lighting patterns, contrasting tones and textures present. My vision is to create a sense of mystery as well as bring connection to nature and simple elements. Investigating detail in nature has created a vision that I feel is becoming more and more disconnected and I hope to bring this connection back through photography.
Utilising the natural light and darks, I hope to portray the life experiences of the light and dark moments of our lives and that the contrast of the object relates to our personal experiences of emotions. Sammy 16.05.2020
